The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is unique because it is held simultaneously at two locations 30 kilometers apart:Nashik City (Ramkund) and Trimbakeshwar (Kushavarta Kund). Understanding the difference between the two is crucial for planning your accommodation and holy dip.
Historically, the Kumbh Mela in Nashik experienced violent clashes between different sects of Sadhus over bathing rights. To solve this, the British administration (and later the Indian government) officially split the festival:
👉 Vaishnavite Akhadas (followers of Lord Vishnu) bathe at Ramkund in Nashik city.
👉 Shaivite Akhadas (followers of Lord Shiva, including Naga Sadhus) bathe at Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar.
We highly recommend booking your hotel or tent in Nashik City (or its outskirts like Pathardi/Ambad). Nashik has the infrastructure to handle millions of tourists. You can easily spend your main days in Nashik, and take a dedicated 1-day bus trip to Trimbakeshwar for the Jyotirlinga Darshan.
If your primary goal is to witness the Shaivite Naga Sadhus or perform specific ancestral rituals (Narayan Nagbali) at the Jyotirlinga, stay in Trimbakeshwar. However, be prepared for basic accommodation (ashrams/dharamshalas) and intense crowds in narrow town lanes.
Absolutely NOT on a Shahi Snan day.
On the peak bathing days, the 30km highway connecting Nashik and Trimbakeshwar is completely blocked by pedestrian traffic, police barricades, and official processions. Even on normal Mela days, traveling between the two can take 2-3 hours each way due to diversions. Plan to dedicate separate days to each location.
